Bethesda's Starfield initially planned to feature graphic gore and dismemberment, but technical hurdles forced its removal. Former character artist Dennis Mejillones, who worked on Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Starfield, explained to Kiwi Talkz that integrating these mechanics with the game's diverse spacesuits proved excessively complex.
The intricate details of suit interaction, including helmet removal and realistic flesh depiction beneath, created significant technical challenges. Mejillones described the resulting system as overly complicated, citing the numerous variables introduced by customizable body sizes and the various attachments on spacesuits.
While some fans expressed disappointment over the absence of gore and dismemberment – features present in Fallout 4 – Mejillones argued that such mechanics are more fitting for Fallout's humorous tone. He noted that the visceral elements contribute to Fallout's overall playful aesthetic.
Despite this omission, Starfield, Bethesda's first major single-player RPG in eight years, has still captivated over 15 million players since its September 2023 release. IGN's 7/10 review highlighted the game's compelling quests and satisfying combat as key strengths.
Recent revelations from another former Bethesda developer underscored the game's extensive loading times, particularly in Neon. However, Bethesda has actively addressed post-launch issues, including implementing a 60fps performance mode. The "Shattered Space" expansion also launched in September.
