Update on the Shadow of the Colossus Movie Adaptation
Director Andy Muschietti offers an update on the long-awaited film adaptation of Shadow of the Colossus. While the project's development has spanned over a decade, Muschietti assures fans it's far from abandoned. Sony Pictures initially announced the live-action adaptation in 2009, with the game's creator, Fumito Ueda, involved from the outset. The directorial role has seen a change, with Muschietti taking over from Josh Trank due to scheduling conflicts.
This adaptation announcement comes alongside other recent game-to-film projects revealed by Sony at CES 2025, including a Helldivers movie, a Horizon Zero Dawn film, and a Ghost of Tsushima animated feature.
Muschietti, known for his work on It and The Flash, addressed the Shadow of the Colossus film's prolonged development during an interview on Radio TU's La Baulera del Coso. He confirmed the project's ongoing status, explaining that factors beyond creative desires, such as the IP's popularity and associated budget, are influencing the timeline. He mentioned the existence of multiple scripts, with one currently favored.
The Shadow of the Colossus game's impact extends beyond its own success. Its influence is evident in games like Capcom's 2024 title, Dragon's Dogma 2. While Muschietti isn't a self-proclaimed "big gamer," he acknowledges the game's "masterpiece" status, having played it multiple times. The director's enthusiasm, coupled with Ueda's continued success (including the announcement of a new sci-fi game from his studio GenDesign at The Game Awards 2024), suggests a continued commitment to bringing this iconic game to the big screen. Despite the 2018 PlayStation 4 remake, the legacy of Shadow of the Colossus is poised to continue, hopefully captivating both existing fans and new audiences.
