Civilization VII's Advanced Access Launch Receives Backlash on Steam
Civilization VII (Civ 7) launched its Advanced Access five days early, on February 6th, but the early release has been met with overwhelmingly negative feedback on Steam, resulting in a "mostly negative" overall rating. This is despite high anticipation for the game, the first in the series since Civ VI in 2016.
The primary criticisms center around several key areas:
User Interface (UI): Many players find the UI significantly inferior to Civ VI, describing it as "janky," "ugly," and even comparing it to a "free mobile knockoff." Some speculate that Firaxis Games prioritized console development, resulting in a limited and visually unappealing UI for the PC version.
Maps and Map Customization: Players are disappointed with the limited map options. Civ 7 offers only three map sizes (Small, Medium, Large) compared to Civ VI's five, and customization options are reportedly scarce. Navigation and information regarding map types are also criticized as insufficient.
Resource Mechanics: The shift from map-based resource gathering in Civ VI to a city/empire-centric resource management system in Civ VII has been poorly received. Players argue the older system provided greater replayability.
Firaxis Games has acknowledged the negative feedback, particularly concerning the UI, stating they are actively investigating player concerns and committed to ongoing improvements through updates and expansions. They encourage players to continue providing feedback. The future of Civ 7's reception remains to be seen, pending significant improvements based on this early player feedback.
