A Glimpse into a Lost Iron Man Game
Following the release of X-Men 2: Wolverine’s Revenge, Edwards began work on what was to be titled "The Invincible Iron Man," a nod to the character's original comic book name. He shared title card images, gameplay screenshots, and original Xbox footage showing the game's startup and a desert-based tutorial level.
Activision's Decision to Cancel
Despite positive fan reaction to the revealed material, Activision axed "The Invincible Iron Man" shortly after development began. Genepool Software subsequently closed, leaving the team jobless. While Activision never officially explained the cancellation, Edwards suggested several possibilities: delays to the related film, dissatisfaction with the game's quality, or another developer potentially taking over the project.
A Unique Iron Man Design
Many commenters noted the stark contrast between the game's Iron Man design and the later MCU portrayal by Robert Downey Jr. The game's design, predating the MCU by almost five years, closely resembled the "Ultimate Marvel" comic book version from the early 2000s. Edwards stated the design was the artist's decision.
Edwards promised more gameplay footage, but at the time of writing, this remains unreleased. The revelation offers a fascinating look at a lost piece of gaming history and the often-uncertain fate of video game projects.
