Avowed may not be a groundbreaking title, but it certainly captures the essence of what makes RPGs so enchanting, particularly for those who revel in exploration. The game brings to mind the legendary Morrowind, a title that set the bar for immersive worlds long before contemporary benchmarks were established. In Morrowind, every element of the landscape—from rocks and bushes to mountains and the ocean floor—promised adventure. Obsidian Entertainment has embraced the challenge of recreating this sense of discovery, and their efforts appear to have paid off magnificently.
Set within the universe of Pillars of Eternity, Avowed welcomes players into a detailed world that doesn't necessitate prior knowledge of the series. While familiarity with earlier games can enrich the experience, the narrative unfolds seamlessly through in-game conversations and contextual clues. The storyline follows an emissary chosen by the Emperor of Aedyr, dispatched to the Living Lands to investigate a mysterious fungal plague that corrupts souls and drives people to madness. In this universe, souls follow a cycle of life, death, and reincarnation. The protagonist, marked by a divine touch since birth, sports unusual growths resembling plants or fungi on their head, which instills fear in some they meet.
A Chaotic Welcome to Paradise
Upon reaching the Living Lands, the protagonist encounters a tumultuous arrival as their ship is assaulted by deranged Aedyran guards. Landing at the port city of Paradise—a name that feels both ironic and apt—they find high-ranking officials missing, the city gates sealed, and chaos prevailing, a scenario that will feel familiar to fans of classic RPGs.
The joy of exploration quickly becomes apparent as hidden treasures await discovery. My initial impulse was to dive into the sea near the port, where I found submerged riches while narrowly escaping drowning. This led me to a smugglers' camp, where I overheard their plans and narrowly escaped detection. Back in the port, I eagerly accepted quests and began exploring every corner of the area.
Treasures Beneath Every Stone
A standout moment was breaking into a locked house, looting its contents, and then climbing scaffolding to reach a lighthouse. There, I discovered a treasure map, unique yellow-tier boots with an intriguing backstory, and stunning vistas. As night fell, the surrounding mushrooms illuminated, revealing new paths and secrets.
Every part of the game world holds surprises. Under the lighthouse, in the sewers, a chest lay hidden beneath spiderwebs, waiting to be uncovered. Nearby, perched on beams, a nest contained coins. On a cliff's edge, a backpack filled with goodies awaited, while below, a sunbathing skeleton offered a poignant scene. Even tossing an ice grenade into water created a temporary ice bridge to retrieve submerged loot.
Stories Waiting to Be Discovered
These moments of discovery are plentiful throughout the game. Supplies appear unexpectedly on rooftops, behind waterfalls, and atop hills, leading to new quests, rare relics, and engaging scenarios. For example, while scavenging in the slums, I broke into a shack and encountered a blind man and his grieving wife, threatened by mercenaries. Another instance involved helping a nobleman retrieve a lost ring from a sewer, which I discovered boosted my health regeneration—an item I chose to keep.
Another moving encounter was finding two lovers who had died together, near a lift leading to the northern outskirts where guards inspected a dead smuggler. Following this trail, I battled through a reptilian camp and confronted a formidable giant, testing my combat prowess and gear.
Endless Possibilities and Exploration
In just eight hours of playtime, I experienced numerous adventures without touching the main questline or engaging in repetitive grinding. Instead, I focused on exploring, experimenting with various character builds, and understanding how different items interacted. Whether using a shield and staff or switching to heavy armor and melee weapons, each decision unlocked new possibilities.
With many questions unanswered and numerous systems yet to explore, my journey in Avowed is far from over. A path of hidden chests, untold stories, and forgotten treasures lies ahead. Currently, the game offers an endless series of discoveries, reminding me why RPGs continue to be one of gaming's most captivating genres.
