EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and a 2.0 Reboot?

As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges its underperformance despite a massive player base. While the game boasts over 200 million players, its revenue isn't meeting EA's expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed this in a recent financial call, stating that while the game's trajectory hasn't been ideal, EA is actively addressing the issue.

Wilson outlined a three-pronged approach: continued community support (including quality-of-life improvements and anti-cheat measures), ongoing content creation, and a significant game overhaul, dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0."

While acknowledging progress in content creation, Wilson admitted it hasn't been sufficient. Apex Legends 2.0 aims to revitalize the franchise, attract new players, and ultimately boost revenue. However, its release is strategically planned for after the next Battlefield title, likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year.

Wilson emphasized EA's long-term commitment to Apex Legends, envisioning it as a franchise with a lifespan of decades. Apex 2.0 isn't intended as the final iteration but a significant update to enhance the overall gaming experience. The company is committed to supporting its existing tens of millions of players while attracting new ones.

The planned overhaul echoes Activision's approach with Warzone 2.0. While the success of that reboot remains debatable, EA will undoubtedly learn from its competitors' experiences in the battle royale market.

Despite its current challenges, Apex Legends maintains a strong presence on Steam, consistently ranking among the top-played games. However, its concurrent player count is significantly below its peak, raising concerns about its future trajectory.
