Annapurna Interactive Staff Quit After Failed NegotiationsBacklash at Annapurna Interactive
While specifics remain limited, it seems the staff, led by Annapurna Interactive's then-president Nathan Gary, aimed to establish the videogame publishing branch as an independent company. However, these negotiations reportedly collapsed, leading over 20 staff to depart following Gary's resignation a couple of days prior.
Annapurna Pictures’ Ellison reassured their collaborators that they remain dedicated to supporting their ongoing projects and expanding their presence in the interactive entertainment industry. "We continue to seek opportunities to take a more integrated approach to linear and interactive storytelling across film and TV, gaming, and theater," Ellison told Bloomberg News.
The consequences of this mass departure are extensive. Independent developers who partnered with Annapurna are left in uncertainty, with "game creators working with Annapurna," according to Bloomberg, striving "to find new contacts and determine whether the company will continue to fulfill its agreements."
Remedy Entertainment, whose forthcoming game Control 2 was partially financed by Annapurna Interactive, has at least addressed the situation via its communications director Thomas Puha on Twitter (X).
"Many of you are inquiring about the news concerning Annapurna," Puha began. "Thank you for your concern! Remedy’s agreement for Control 2, including Alan Wake and Control AV rights, is with Annapurna Pictures, and we are self-publishing Control 2.
Over a week ago, Annapurna announced a restructuring of its gaming operations. Sanchez has been appointed to lead the indie gaming department, following the exit of former president Nathan Gary and co-heads of the company’s indie division, Deborah Mars and Nathan Vella.
