George R. R. Martin, the mastermind behind the intricate world of *Game of Thrones*, has recently hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie, stirring excitement among fans. Known for his contribution to FromSoftware’s critically acclaimed game Elden Ring, which became one of the best-selling titles of 2022, Martin's involvement was heavily highlighted in the game's promotional efforts and credits, alongside FromSoftware's Hidetaka Miyazaki.
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin was asked about his potential involvement in an Elden Ring sequel. While he sidestepped the topic of a sequel, he dropped a significant hint regarding a possible movie adaptation of Elden Ring, stating, "Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring."
This isn't the first time Martin has teased the idea of an Elden Ring movie. Hidetaka Miyazaki, FromSoftware's president, has also expressed openness to an adaptation, emphasizing the need for a "very strong partner" to bring such a project to life. In an interview with The Guardian, Miyazaki noted, "I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example. But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium."
Despite the enthusiasm, Martin acknowledged a significant obstacle to his deep involvement in the potential Elden Ring movie: his ongoing work on *The Winds of Winter*. Speaking to IGN, he said, "We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know. I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The wait for *The Winds of Winter*, the sixth book in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series, has been long and fraught with delays. Martin, who is 13 years behind schedule, admitted to IGN, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late. Every time I say that, I’m [like], ‘How could I be 13 years late?’ I don’t know, it happens a day at a time." Despite the delays, he remains committed, stating, "But that’s still a priority. A lot of people are already writing obituaries for me. [They’re saying] ‘Oh, he’ll never be finished.’ Maybe they’re right. I don’t know. I’m alive right now! I seem pretty vital!"
The anticipation for *The Winds of Winter* has been building since the release of *A Dance With Dragons* in 2011, the same year HBO launched the wildly successful *Game of Thrones* series, which brought Martin's fantasy world to a global audience.
Regarding his work on Elden Ring, Martin shared insights on his collaboration with FromSoftware, explaining how he contributed to the game's worldbuilding. He described how the team sought to understand the history that shaped the game's world, saying, "They wanted the world. They knew the action of Elden Ring that the players would get into would be in the ‘present.’ But something had created that present, had created that world. So where did that world come from?" Martin's role involved fleshing out the backstory, including the lore of magic and runes, which he worked out in detail.
When asked if all his written material was used in the game, Martin noted that worldbuilding often involves more than what appears on screen, stating, "Yeah, I think especially when you're world building, there's always more that you actually see on the screen. And that's true of any of these big epic fantasies. I mean, you look at Tolkien and there are hundreds of pages of past history before you get to even the era of the Hobbit and dozens of kings and wars and things like that."
