Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster’s Development Time Was Longer Than Expected
Developers Wanted To Honor The Originals
The developers of Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster poured their hearts into ensuring that this remaster would be a faithful representation of the classics. In an insightful interview with Dengeki Online on March 4, 2025, the team behind Suikoden I & II HD Remaster (Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR) shared the intricacies of their journey to deliver a high-quality remaster.
Initially announced in 2022 with a planned release in 2023, the game faced delays and is now scheduled for release this year. Game Director Takahiro Sakiyama explained that during the final stages of development, the team encountered issues that necessitated further refinement, leading to the postponement.
Tatsuya Ogushi, another Game Director for Suikoden 1 and 2 HDR, emphasized their approach, stating, "Rather than rushing, we took the time to understand the situation fully. After thorough discussions with Sakiyama about the quality benchmarks, it was evident that we needed to address several areas meticulously."
Reviving the Series
The remaster project is not merely a standalone effort but the initial step in reviving the Suikoden franchise. Producer Rui Naito articulated their long-term vision, emphasizing the importance of a solid foundation for the series' revival.
Naito conveyed to the production team, "The most crucial aspect was that this remaster represents the first step in reviving the Suikoden IP. We couldn't afford to falter here. The directive was clear: 'make it solid.' For Suikoden I & II HDR, I instructed Sakiyama and the team to create something robust, as a half-hearted start could jeopardize the entire revival effort."
Gensou Suikoden Live Revealed New Anime, Mobile Game, and More

Naito described the live event as the second step in their multi-phase approach to reviving the IP, though he remained uncertain about the total number of steps required.
He explained, "We've been diligently working on refining Suikoden I & II HDR and are equally committed to the upcoming mobile game, Suikoden STAR LEAP, and the Suikoden II anime. Once we successfully deliver these projects, we can then consider our next moves."
Konami also announced Suikoden: The Anime, an adaptation of the events in Suikoden 2, marking the first venture into anime for Konami Animation. Additionally, a new mobile game, Genso Suikoden: STAR LEAP, was unveiled. While teaser trailers for both the anime and mobile game have been released, specific release dates remain undisclosed.
