The challenge of crafting new weapon types in the Monster Hunter franchise is significant. This article delves into the complexities of weapon balancing and reveals details about the upcoming MH Wilds x MH Now collaboration.
Monster Hunter Wilds: Exploring the Possibility of a 15th Weapon Type
A New Weapon Remains a Possibility
After over a decade with a consistent weapon roster, the Monster Hunter series might finally see a new addition. In a February 16, 2025 interview with PCGamesN, Monster Hunter Wilds Director Yuya Tokuda discussed the potential for a 15th weapon type.
Monster Hunter Wilds offers 14 weapon types, unchanged since Monster Hunter 4 and the introduction of the Insect Glaive. While Tokuda expressed interest in creating a new weapon, he explained that the decision to not include one in recent titles wasn't due to any specific obstacle. The primary challenge lies in designing a weapon that doesn't excessively overlap with existing options while maintaining balance. He elaborated on the considerable resources and time required to ensure all weapons feel fresh and balanced, stating that these resources were better allocated to refining existing weapons rather than introducing a new one.
Capcom's Approach to Weapon Refinement in Monster Hunter Wilds
Capcom's commitment to innovation is evident in MH Wilds' additions like Focus Mode and Power Clash. While acknowledging community feedback from the beta, Tokuda emphasized the importance of preserving the core feel of each weapon type, avoiding drastic changes.
Weapon balancing is a meticulous process, Tokuda explained. Each title begins with a conceptual design for each weapon, which is then tested and refined. The true test, however, comes from player feedback, ensuring the actual in-game experience aligns with the initial design vision.
Balancing the weapons for Wilds presented unique challenges, particularly given the additions made to Iceborne's weapon movesets. These additions, designed for the higher difficulty of master rank, meant that players were expected to have a strong grasp of the weapon's fundamentals. For Wilds, the team opted for a complete overhaul, prioritizing a cohesive play feel over simply retaining elements from previous titles.
Monster Hunter Now x Monster Hunter Wilds Collaboration Event Phase 2
To celebrate the upcoming release, Monster Hunter Now will launch Phase 2 of its collaboration with MH Wilds on February 28, 2025. This phase will introduce the Chatacabra monster, 12 Hope weapons from MH Wilds, and two new layered armors. Players can also earn vouchers for MH Wilds items through limited-time quests.
Niantic's Senior Producer, Sakae Osumi, hinted at future collaborations, expressing a desire to incorporate more monsters from Wilds.
Monster Hunter Wilds launches February 28, 2025 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
