Following this morning's Nintendo Switch 2 unveiling, rumors suggesting Joy-Con functionality as a mouse seem increasingly plausible.
The reveal trailer shows detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface. They connect to connectors with flat bottoms, moving across the surface like a mouse on a mousepad. A slider pad is visible on one connector, further supporting this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on a Joy-Con sensor, similar to those in computer mice. Nintendo hasn't confirmed this feature, nor its implications. Fans envision applications in mouse-and-keyboard-centric games like Civilization, while others anticipate innovative uses within first-party Nintendo titles. The possibilities remain open.
While much about potential Switch 2 mouse support (and the new Joy-Con button's function) remains unknown, several details are confirmed: The system's name is Nintendo Switch 2; launch is slated for 2025; a new Mario Kart is in development; backward compatibility with the original Switch is ensured; and further software announcements are promised in an April Direct.
