Microsoft is pushing the boundaries of artificial intelligence by introducing its AI Copilot into the Xbox gaming experience. This innovative feature, set to roll out for Xbox Insiders via the Xbox mobile app, aims to enhance your gaming by offering advice, helping you recall where you left off in your last session, and performing various other tasks to streamline your gameplay.
Copilot, which replaced Cortana in 2023 and is already integrated into Windows, will bring a suite of features to gaming. At launch, you'll be able to use Copilot to install games on your Xbox—a task that's currently a single-button operation—and inquire about your play history, achievements, game library, or get recommendations on what to play next. Additionally, you can interact with Copilot directly through the Xbox app during gameplay, receiving responses akin to those provided by Copilot on Windows.
A standout feature at launch is Copilot's role as a gaming assistant. You can already query Copilot about games on your PC, asking how to defeat a challenging boss or solve a tricky puzzle, and it will pull answers from Bing, utilizing various online resources like guides, websites, wikis, and forums. Soon, this functionality will extend to the Xbox app, making it easier to get help when you need it.
Microsoft's vision for Copilot extends beyond these initial features. In a press briefing, spokespeople discussed potential future uses, such as serving as a walkthrough assistant to explain game mechanics, recalling item locations within games, suggesting new items to find, or even assisting in competitive games by offering real-time strategy tips and post-engagement analysis. While these are currently just ideas, Microsoft is committed to integrating Copilot deeply into the Xbox gaming experience, eventually collaborating with both first-party and third-party game studios.
Regarding user privacy and control, Microsoft has confirmed that Xbox Insiders can opt out of using Copilot during the preview phase. However, the company left open the possibility that Copilot could become mandatory in the future. A spokesperson stated, "During this preview on mobile, players will be able to decide how and when they want to interact with Copilot for Gaming, whether it has access to their conversation history, and what it does on their behalf. As we preview and test Copilot for Gaming with players early, we will continue to be transparent about what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices players have around sharing their personal data."
Furthermore, Microsoft's ambitions for Copilot go beyond player-focused applications. The company will present its plans for developer use at the Game Developers Conference next week, indicating a broader integration of AI across the gaming ecosystem.
