The 10 Best PlayStation 1 Games on Nintendo Switch – SwitchArcade Special

Author : Alexander Feb 11,2025

This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game selections. I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, boasting a legendary library with enduring appeal—many titles still see modern re-releases. While these games initially challenged Nintendo, everyone now benefits from their availability on various platforms. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):

Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)

Klonoa, a deserving yet underappreciated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Play as a charming, floppy-eared creature journeying through a dream world to thwart a looming threat. Expect vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are essential.

Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)

A monumental RPG, Final Fantasy VII introduced the genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's crowning achievement and a catalyst for the PlayStation's success. While a remake exists, the original FFVII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring popularity remains undeniable.

Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)

Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a captivating, action-packed adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of G.I. Joe. The fun gameplay is a major draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.

G-Darius HD ($29.99)

G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series to 3D. While the polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, they possess a unique charm. The vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive boss designs make for a compelling shooter.

Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)

To avoid over-representation of Square Enix titles, I've included only this and FFVII. Chrono Cross, while failing to match the acclaim of Chrono Trigger, stands as a creative and visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit underdeveloped, cast. Its soundtrack is legendary.

Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)

While I appreciate most Mega Man games, objectivity suggests recommending only a few to newcomers. In the Mega Man X series, X4 stands out for its superior cohesion. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to judge for yourselves.

Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)

Sony published many non-owned titles. Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with polished action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins designer, it's deceptively challenging.

Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)

Originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing DNA with Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system.

Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)

Lara Croft's PlayStation debut is iconic. While quality varied across the five games, the original excels with its tomb-raiding focus. This collection lets you decide your favorite.

moon ($18.99)

A Japanese-exclusive release, moon deconstructs the traditional RPG, leaning more towards an adventure game with a "punk" aesthetic. It's not always fun, but its unconventional approach and message are compelling.

This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on Switch in the comments! Thank you for reading.
