Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they were replaced after the game's patch notes went live. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry regarding the use of generative AI.
While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike (its development predated the July 25, 2024, strike commencement), the actors' decisions not to sign new contracts reflect solidarity with striking union members and a desire for AI protection.
Chase, unwilling to work without a SAG Interim Agreement offering AI protections, publicly stated their replacement. Thurkettle, a non-union member, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the existential threat AI poses to voice actors and expressing his support for AI protection measures, even at the cost of his role. Both actors expressed surprise at their replacement, noting a lack of communication from HoYoverse and Sound Cadence. HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.
This isn't an isolated incident. Activision similarly recast some Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 voice actors, including William Peck (Zeke Alton) and Samantha Maxis (Julie Nathanson), during the strike. While Alton didn't object to the replacement itself, he voiced concern about the lack of credit for the new actor, potentially misrepresenting his abilities to fans.
