World of Warcraft's Corrupted Blood Bug Returns in Season of Discovery
The infamous Corrupted Blood incident, a notorious event in World of Warcraft's history, has unexpectedly reappeared in the Season of Discovery servers. Players have recreated the chaos of the original 2005 event, unintentionally unleashing a deadly plague in major cities.
The source of the problem? The Zul'Gurub raid, introduced in Phase 5 of Season of Discovery (September 2024), brought back the Corrupted Blood spell. Originally part of the 2005 Rise of the Blood God patch, this spell dealt damage over time and spread rapidly to nearby players. While manageable in the raid itself with sufficient healing, players quickly discovered they could weaponize it, using pets and minions to spread the plague far beyond Zul'Gurub's confines.
Videos circulating online, such as one posted on r/classicwow by Lightstruckx, show the Corrupted Blood debuff spreading rapidly through Stormwind City's Trade District. The footage eerily echoes the original 2005 incident, where players deliberately used "pet bombs" to spread the plague across the game world for weeks.
Concerns for Hardcore Realms
The re-emergence of this bug has sparked concern, particularly for players of World of Warcraft: Classic Hardcore. Unlike Season of Discovery, Hardcore mode features permadeath, meaning a single death wipes out a character. The potential for malicious use of the Corrupted Blood bug in Hardcore presents a significant challenge.
While Blizzard has implemented various fixes over the years, the persistence of this issue highlights the lasting legacy of the Corrupted Blood incident. With Season of Discovery's seventh phase slated for early 2025, the question remains: when will Blizzard fully resolve this recurring problem?
