Krafton Inc. Acquires Tango Gameworks, Saving Hi-Fi Rush from Closure
Just months after Microsoft announced the closure of Tango Gameworks, the acclaimed studio behind Hi-Fi Rush and The Evil Within series, Krafton Inc., the publisher of PUBG, has stepped in to acquire the studio and its assets, including the rights to the popular rhythm action game.
This acquisition marks a significant development, especially considering Microsoft's earlier decision to shutter Tango Gameworks, a move that surprised many industry observers and fans. Krafton has stated its commitment to a smooth transition, working closely with Xbox and ZeniMax to ensure continuity for Tango Gameworks' team and ongoing projects. The studio will continue developing the Hi-Fi Rush IP and explore new projects under Krafton's umbrella.
Krafton emphasized its strategic investment in the Japanese video game market with this acquisition, highlighting the talented team at Tango Gameworks and the acclaimed Hi-Fi Rush IP. The publisher reassured fans that existing titles like The Evil Within, The Evil Within 2, and Ghostwire: Tokyo will remain unaffected, continuing to be available on their respective platforms. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed their collaboration with Krafton to support Tango Gameworks' continued game development.
While Hi-Fi Rush’s success, including awards such as "Best Animation" at the BAFTA Games Awards and "Best Audio Design" at The Game Awards, was undeniable, Microsoft’s decision to close Tango Gameworks was part of a larger restructuring effort focused on high-impact titles. The studio’s recent work on a physical edition of Hi-Fi Rush with Limited Run Games, and a final game patch, further demonstrated their dedication to the title even after layoffs.
Although there's been speculation about a potential Hi-Fi Rush 2, no official announcement has been made regarding Tango Gameworks' future projects under Krafton. However, Krafton's commitment to supporting innovation and delivering exciting experiences suggests a positive outlook for the studio and its future endeavors.
This acquisition not only secures the future of Hi-Fi Rush but also represents a significant move by Krafton into the Japanese game development market and a testament to the talent and dedication of the Tango Gameworks team.
