Nvidia's New App: FPS Drops Reported in Some Games
Nvidia's recently launched app is causing frame rate (FPS) drops in specific games and PC configurations. This article explores the performance issues stemming from Nvidia's latest game optimization software.
Performance Impact Varies Across Games and Systems
PC Gamer's December 18th testing revealed inconsistent performance impacts. Some users reported stuttering while using the app. A temporary fix, suggested by Nvidia staff, involves disabling the "Game Filters and Photo Mode" overlay.
Tests with Black Myth: Wukong (Ryzen 7 7800X3D and RTX 4070 Super) showed a slight FPS increase (59 fps to 63 fps at 1080p Very High settings) with the overlay off, but a significant 12% drop at Medium settings with the overlay enabled. Cyberpunk 2077 testing (Core Ultra 9 285K and RTX 4080 Super) showed no noticeable difference with the overlay on or off, highlighting the inconsistent nature of the problem.
User reports on Twitter (X) confirm these findings, with some suggesting driver rollbacks as a workaround. Currently, Nvidia's official solution remains disabling the overlay, although many users still experience instability.
Nvidia App: Successor to GeForce Experience
Initially launched in February 2024 as a beta, the Nvidia app replaced GeForce Experience in November 2024. This coincided with a graphics driver update. The new app boasts improved features and a streamlined overlay system, eliminating the need for account logins.
Despite these improvements, Nvidia needs to address the performance inconsistencies affecting some users. Further investigation is required to pinpoint the root cause and deliver a comprehensive solution.
