Nintendo Switch 2: Official Announcement Expected January 16th
Reliable sources indicate Nintendo will finally unveil the highly anticipated Nintendo Switch 2 on Thursday, January 16th, 2025. This early 2025 reveal strongly suggests a first-half 2025 release.
The Switch 2's existence has been an open secret for some time. Reports suggest mass production began as early as late September or early October 2024, corroborated by numerous hardware leaks. Nintendo previously committed to an announcement before March 31st, 2025, a deadline this January reveal comfortably meets.
NateTheHate, a reputable leaker, broke the January 16th date on his podcast, citing unnamed sources. This aligns with Nintendo's history of using Thursdays for major announcements – mirroring the original Switch reveal in 2016. The Verge's Tom Warren independently corroborated this information.
Extensive Leaks Precede Official Reveal
While a pre-announcement teaser on social media, similar to the 2017 Switch launch, remains a possibility, the sheer volume of leaks makes a surprise reveal unlikely. The extent of these leaks is such that Nintendo even addressed a Switch 2 replica, a rare acknowledgment of unofficial information.
Rumors paint a picture of a slightly larger console than the Switch OLED (270 x 116 x 14mm) with an 8-inch LCD screen and magnetically attaching Joy-Cons. The right Joy-Con reportedly features an extra "C" button, its function currently unknown but potentially linked to a rumored mouse-like pointer mode.
Launch Titles Remain Enigmatic
Unlike the hardware itself, the Switch 2's launch game lineup remains shrouded in mystery. While My Time at Evershine and Bestiario are confirmed, neither is expected to be a day-one release if the console launches in the first half of 2025. Nintendo is likely to include at least one or two major first-party titles to drive initial sales.
