The game director of The Blood Of Dawnwalker explained why he quit CDPR and opened his own studio

Following the releases of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, several key figures from CD Projekt RED departed to pursue independent ventures. One such project, The Blood of Dawnwalker, is now in development.

The Blood of Dawnwalker is the brainchild of Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by a veteran CD Projekt RED developer. Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, in explaining his departure from CDPR, highlighted several key factors:

The desire to explore fresh creative avenues with trusted colleagues fueled the creation of Rebel Wolves. While possessing a deep appreciation for the established conventions of role-playing games, Tomaszkiewicz and his team envisioned innovative expansions and departures from traditional RPG mechanics. The challenges of implementing these radical concepts within the structure of a large corporation – particularly concerning the development of original intellectual property – ultimately led to the decision to establish their own studio. This independent approach, while inherently riskier, allows for greater creative freedom and agility.

In contrast to the complexities of larger studios, Rebel Wolves prioritizes direct collaboration and open communication within its smaller team. This fosters a more streamlined process of idea exchange and vision alignment, facilitating the pursuit of unique and ambitious creative goals. The intimate team structure, Tomaszkiewicz argues, enables a more intense and focused creative energy, making the realization of innovative ideas more attainable.
