The reign of keyboard and mouse in PC gaming is undeniable, particularly for genres like first-person shooters and strategy games where precision is paramount. Adapting these genres for consoles was once considered a monumental task, yet PlayStation and Xbox now boast numerous ports, though PC remains the optimal platform for many.
While most PC games strive for robust keyboard and mouse support, some titles truly excel with controllers. Fast-paced action games and those emphasizing reflex-based movement often benefit from a gamepad's intuitive controls. Similarly, genres with console origins often feel more natural on controllers, even after their transition to PC.
This list has been updated (January 7, 2025) to reflect recent releases. Games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Infinity Nikki, Marvel Rivals, Path of Exile 2, and Delta Force, while excellent, generally perform better with keyboard and mouse. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered, however, offers a slightly enhanced experience with a gamepad, although the difference is minimal.
Several upcoming PC games (release within the next month) show promise for controller use:
- Freedom Wars Remastered: A PS Vita revival echoing the Monster Hunter formula, ideally suited to controller play.
- Tales of Graces f Remastered: The Tales series consistently shines with gamepads, and this remaster is expected to follow suit.
- Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth: The previous remake favored controllers on PC, and Rebirth's similar combat system suggests a similar preference.
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2: Another PS5-to-PC port, likely prioritizing controller input, though keyboard and mouse will probably suffice.
A 2024 Soulslike game has also been added below.
