Civilization VII: Top PC Game of 2025 and New Campaign Mechanics
Civilization VII has been crowned the most anticipated PC game of 2025 by PC Gamer's "Most Wanted" event. This accolade follows the reveal of innovative gameplay mechanics designed to enhance campaign engagement. Let's delve into the details.
Claiming the Top Spot
The December 6th PC Gaming Show: Most Wanted showcased the 25 most exciting games slated for release in 2025. The rankings were determined by a vote from The Council, a panel of over 70 developers, content creators, and PC Gamer editors. Civ VII emerged victorious, beating out strong contenders like Doom: The Dark Ages and Monster Hunter Wilds. Other notable games featured included Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. The event also included trailers and updates for other titles.
Civilization VII launches simultaneously on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on February 11, 2025.
Revolutionizing Campaigns with the "Ages" Mechanic
Addressing player feedback regarding incomplete campaigns in Civ VI, Firaxis Games introduced the "Ages" mechanic in Civ VII. Creative Director Ed Beach explained this new system in a PC Gamer interview. The campaign is structured into three distinct Ages: Antiquity, Exploration, and Modern.
Instead of a single civilization playthrough, players can transition to a historically or geographically linked civilization at the end of each Age. This mirrors the rise and fall of real-world empires. For example, the Roman Empire might transition to the French Empire, potentially with the Norman Empire serving as a bridge.
Importantly, your leader remains consistent across Ages, maintaining a sense of continuity and rivalry. The "overbuild" feature allows constructing new buildings atop existing ones, but Wonders and certain structures remain unchanged.
This innovative approach allows players to experience multiple civilizations within a single playthrough, offering diverse challenges and strategic opportunities while preserving a connection to their chosen leader.
