George R.R. Martin Praises 'Knight of the Seven Kingdoms' as Faithful Adaptation

Author : Eric Apr 19,2025

George R.R. Martin, the mastermind behind "A Song of Ice and Fire," has expressed his enthusiasm for the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms." In his latest blog post, Martin shared that the six-episode series has completed filming at HBO and is slated for release "late this year," potentially in the fall. Unlike his stance on previous spin-offs like "House of the Dragon," Martin has shown significant approval for this project.

Martin has already viewed all six episodes, with the final two seen in rough cuts, and he couldn't be more thrilled. "Dunk and Egg have always been favorites of mine, and the actors we found to portray them are just incredible," he noted. The series features standout performances from Peter Claffey as Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and Dexter Sol Ansell as Prince Aegon Targaryen (Egg). Martin also praised the entire cast, teasing exciting new characters such as the Laughing Storm and Tanselle Too-Tall.

"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is an adaptation of "The Hedge Knight," the first novella in Martin's Dunk and Egg series. He described it as "as faithful an adaptation as a reasonable man could hope for," emphasizing his satisfaction with how the story has been brought to life. However, Martin cautioned that fans expecting intense action may be disappointed. "There’s a huge fight scene here, as exciting as anyone could ask for, but there are no dragons this time around, no huge battles, no white walkers," he explained. Instead, the series focuses on themes of duty, honor, and the essence of chivalry.

While fans eagerly await the premiere, HBO has released some images and a brief teaser trailer to build anticipation. Martin also touched on future plans, mentioning the adaptation of "The Sworn Sword," the second tale in the Dunk and Egg series. He humorously acknowledged the ongoing wait for "The Winds of Winter," reassuring fans that he is aware of their reminders and will continue working on it, along with other tales featuring Dunk and Egg.
