Unlock the full potential of your vehicle's diagnostics with Piston, bringing comprehensive OBD2 information directly to your mobile device. Are you facing the frustration of a Check Engine Light (MIL)? With Piston, transform your smartphone into a powerful car scanner that not only reads the Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) but also captures the Freeze Frame data. This invaluable tool helps you pinpoint and resolve issues quickly and efficiently.
To get started, you'll need an ELM327-based adapter, available in Bluetooth or WiFi options, which you'll connect to your vehicle's OBD2 socket. Piston offers step-by-step guidance through the connection process, accessible from the Home page post-installation or via the Settings menu at any time.
Piston's capabilities include:
- Reading and clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) as defined by the OBD2 standard.
- Accessing Freeze Frame data, which records sensor data at the moment the ECU detects a malfunction.
- Viewing real-time data from your vehicle's sensors.
- Checking the status of Readiness Monitors, ensuring your emission control devices are functioning correctly.
- Storing DTCs in a local history for easy reference.
- Logging into your account to save DTCs in the cloud for long-term access.
- Exploring charts of sensor readouts for detailed analysis.
- Exporting real-time sensor data to a file for further examination.
- Verifying your car's VIN number.
- Examining ECU details such as the OBD protocol or PIDs number.
Some of these features are Premium, unlocked through a one-time in-app purchase, offering full functionality without ongoing subscriptions.
To function as a car scanner, Piston requires an ELM327-based device, compatible with both OBD-II (also known as OBDII or OBD2) and EOBD standards. Vehicles sold in the USA since 1996 are mandated to support OBD2, while in the European Union, EOBD has been required for petrol vehicles since 2001 and diesel vehicles since 2004. In Australia and New Zealand, OBD2 compliance is mandatory for petrol cars from 2006 and diesel cars from 2007.
It's important to note that Piston can only access the data your vehicle supports and provides via the OBD2 standard.
