Assassin's Creed Shadows introduces two compelling protagonists: the Shinobi Naoe and the Samurai Yasuke. However, the ability to switch between them isn't immediately available. This guide clarifies when and how you can control each character.
While Assassin's Creed Shadows boasts a vast open world, the early game is linear. The roughly 90-minute prologue alternates control between Naoe and Yasuke. After completing the prologue, you'll play exclusively as Naoe for several hours. Don't expect to wield your katana right away! Access to Yasuke is restricted until near the end of Act I, specifically during the "Temple of the Horseman" quest. He then becomes temporarily playable in the "Fire and Lightning" quest. Only after completing these quests and Act I can you freely switch between both characters.
How Long Until You Can Switch Protagonists in Assassin's Creed Shadows?
My playthrough took about 10 hours to reach the point where I could freely switch, including significant side content. A focused playthrough aiming solely to unlock this feature should take approximately 6-8 hours.
How to Switch Between Yasuke and Naoe in Assassin's Creed Shadows
Once Act I is complete and free switching is unlocked, it's straightforward. One method is fast traveling. When selecting a fast travel point, you'll see options to travel as either Naoe or Yasuke. This works at various locations, including Synchronization points and Kakurega Hideouts. Additionally, certain story quests offer a choice of protagonist.
When Can You *Not* Switch Protagonists?
While post-Act I offers freedom, specific story moments and major quests lock you into a single character. Keep in mind that some quests and activities are exclusive to either Naoe or Yasuke, indicated by a Samurai helmet (Yasuke) or Shinobi hood (Naoe) icon.
Assassin's Creed Shadows launches March 20th on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
