Steam Deck Game Reviews & Impressions
NBA 2K25 Steam Deck Review
Despite the usual yearly sports game skepticism, NBA 2K25 stands out. It's the first PC version since the PS5 launch to mirror the "Next Gen" experience, and 2K officially confirmed Steam Deck optimization. My experience across Steam Deck, PS5, and Xbox Series X reveals a satisfying, albeit flawed, port.
Key improvements for PC players include ProPLAY technology (previously PS5/Xbox Series X exclusive) and the WNBA and MyNBA modes. If you've avoided recent PC versions, 2K25 delivers the complete package. Let's hope its success ensures continued Next Gen PC releases and dedicated Steam Deck support.
The PC and Steam Deck versions boast 16:10 and 800p support, plus AMD FSR 2, DLSS, and XeSS (though I disabled these for clarity). Extensive graphical settings are available, allowing for adjustments to v-sync, HDR (Steam Deck compatible!), texture detail, and more. I recommend initial shader caching for optimal gameplay. Note that NBA 2K25 on Steam Deck performs a brief shader cache on each boot.
I found the best balance at 60fps capped at 60hz, using the Steam Deck's quick access menu, offering superior clarity compared to default settings. While the Steam Deck visual preset is functional, I found it overly blurry. Most settings were left on low or medium, excluding player and shader detail (medium).
Offline play is limited; MyCAREER and MyTEAM require online access. However, quick play and eras function offline, with noticeably faster load times.
While technically inferior to console versions, the Steam Deck's portability makes it my preferred platform. Load times are slower than on PS5/Xbox Series X, and crossplay isn't available. Microtransactions remain a persistent issue, significantly impacting certain modes. At $69.99, the price point is higher than previous years.
Ultimately, NBA 2K25 delivers a fantastic portable basketball experience on Steam Deck, matching PS5/Xbox Series X feature parity. With minor adjustments, visuals and performance are excellent. 2K has finally brought the full experience to PC, but be mindful of the microtransactions.
NBA 2K25 Steam Deck review score: 4/5
Gimmick! 2 Steam Deck Impressions
Unfamiliar with Gimmick! 2? Check out Shaun's Switch review here. My Steam Deck experience was smooth, despite lacking official Valve testing. A recent patch even includes Steam Deck and Linux fixes.
The game runs at a capped 60fps (forcing 60hz on OLED screens is recommended). While lacking graphical options, 16:10 menu support is present (gameplay remains 16:9). 1080p testing confirmed proper 16:10 support in menus. Given its flawless performance, Steam Deck Verification seems imminent. Shaun's review accurately reflects my gameplay experience.
Arco Steam Deck Mini Review
Arco, a dynamic turn-based RPG, has undergone a significant update since its PC/Switch release. My review focuses on the updated Steam version. The combat system is unique, blending real-time elements into turn-based gameplay. The audio and story are particularly impressive.
Steam Deck compatibility is excellent (Verified), running smoothly at 60fps with 16:9 support. An assist mode (beta) offers combat skipping, infinite dynamite, and first-act skipping on replays.
Arco exceeded expectations, offering superb visuals, music, and a compelling narrative. A free demo is available on Steam.
Arco Steam Deck review score: 5/5
Skull and Bones Steam Deck Mini Review
Skull and Bones, recently added to Steam, is playable but requires a (somewhat sluggish) Ubisoft Connect login. The Steam Deck port is rated "Playable" by Valve. For stable performance, I recommend a 30fps cap at 16:10 and 800p, using FSR 2 quality upscaling (performance mode is more stable). Settings were mostly low, except for high textures.
Early impressions are positive, showing potential with continued support. A free trial is recommended before a full purchase. Note that it's online-only.
Skull and Bones Steam Deck review score: TBA
ODDADA Steam Deck Review
ODDADA, a music-making experience, is a delightful interactive toy. Its aesthetic is reminiscent of Windosill. It utilizes mouse or touch controls on Steam Deck, progressing through levels and instruments.
Running flawlessly at 90fps, it offers resolution, v-sync, and anti-aliasing options. Menu text is slightly small on Steam Deck. Controller support is absent but touch controls work well.
Highly recommended for music and art enthusiasts. Controller support is planned.
ODDADA Steam Deck review score: 4.5/5
Star Trucker Steam Deck Mini Review
Star Trucker blends automobile simulation and space exploration. While not deeply engaging in either genre, it creates a unique experience. It runs well on Proton Experimental.
Extensive graphical settings are available, allowing for customization. I achieved a stable 40fps with a custom low-shadows preset. Controls require some adjustment.
Despite some control issues, the visuals, writing, and radio banter are highlights. Further optimization for Steam Deck is hoped for.
Star Trucker Steam Deck review score: 4/5
DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Mini Review
DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia, a visual novel, is a great sequel to Rio Reincarnation. It features a compelling narrative, multiple paths, and excellent art.
Steam Deck performance is flawless at 720p with 16:9 support. Check system settings to ensure correct button configuration.
Highly recommended for fans of the series, but best played after Rio Reincarnation.
DATE A LIVE: Ren Dystopia Steam Deck Review Score: 4/5
Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES Steam Deck Review Impressions
Total War: PHARAOH DYNASTIES is a significant update to the original, adding content, factions, and improvements. It's a substantial enhancement.
Steam Deck playability is present, though controller support is absent (using trackpad/touch controls). Early impressions are positive.
Pinball FX Steam Deck Impressions
Pinball FX offers a wide selection of tables and impressive PC port features, including HDR support on Steam Deck. Gameplay is enjoyable, and the free-to-play version allows for sampling.
Highly recommended.
New Steam Deck Verified & Playable games for the week
Notable additions include Hookah Haze and OneShot: World Machine Edition (Verified). Black Myth: Wukong's "Unsupported" status is surprising given its performance.
