Stardew Valley: How The Friendship Point System Works

Author : Christopher Jan 24,2025

This guide explores friendship building in Stardew Valley, detailing how to maximize relationships with villagers, whether for friendship or romance. While conversation and gifting are key, not all interactions are equal.

The Heart System:

The in-game heart meter (accessed via the menu) tracks friendship levels with each NPC. Each heart represents 250 friendship points. Positive interactions increase points, while negative ones decrease them.

Boosting Friendship Gain:

The "Friendship 101" book (obtainable from the Prize Machine or the Bookseller in Year 3) provides a permanent 10% boost to friendship gains from positive interactions.

Interaction Point Values:

  • Talking: +20 points (or +10 if the NPC is busy). Failing to talk to an NPC daily results in a friendship decrease (-2 points, -10 with a bouquet given, or -20 for a spouse). Talking
  • Bulletin Board Deliveries: +150 points with the recipient.

Gifting:

Gift preferences vary, but point values are consistent:

  • Loved Gifts: +80 points
  • Liked Gifts: +45 points
  • Neutral Gifts: +20 points
  • Disliked Gifts: -20 points
  • Hated Gifts: -40 points

Birthday and Feast of the Winter Star gifts multiply these values (x8 and x5 respectively).

Gifting

Stardrop Tea:

This universally loved gift grants +250 points (+750 on birthdays/Winter Star), regardless of existing gift limits. It's obtainable through the Prize Machine, Golden Fishing Chests, the Helper's Bundle, or from the raccoon.

Movie Theater:

Inviting an NPC to the movies (using a Movie Ticket) yields varying points based on movie and concession choices.

Conversations & Dialogue:

Dialogue choices can significantly impact friendship (+10 to +50 points or a decrease). Heart Events offer similar opportunities with potentially larger point swings (+/-200 points).

Festivals & Events:

  • Flower Dance: Dancing with an NPC (4 hearts or more) grants +250 points.
  • Luau: Contributing to the community soup yields varying points based on the soup's quality.
  • Community Center (Bulletin Board Bundles): Completing all five bundles awards +500 points with each non-datable villager.
