HBO's The Last of Us Season 2 will resurrect cut content from the original video game, The Last of Us Part II, according to showrunner and Naughty Dog studio head, Neil Druckmann. Druckmann revealed to Entertainment Weekly that the show will feature "pretty brutal" scenes, including elements from the game's "Lost Levels," partially restored in the PlayStation 5 remaster. These levels, including Jackson Party, The Hunt, and Seattle Sewers, offer a range of tones, from the relatively calmer party and boar hunt sequences to the intense horror of Ellie's encounter with monsters in the Seattle sewers.

The inclusion of this cut content promises intense viewing. Druckmann hinted at the appearance of a previously unshown, "pretty prominent" character, echoing the Season 1 introduction of Frank.
Season 2 introduces a substantial cast of new characters, including Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Danny Ramirez as Manny, and Tati Gabrielle as Mel. Catherine O'Hara's role, however, remains shrouded in mystery.
The April premiere of Season 2's first episode will likely shed light on some of these mysteries, but the complete picture may take longer to emerge. Unlike Season 1, which adapted the first game entirely, HBO plans to extend the adaptation of The Last of Us Part II beyond a single season. Showrunner Craig Mazin stated that Part 2's story is significantly more expansive, and while a Season 3 isn't confirmed, Season 2 concludes with a "natural breakpoint" after seven episodes.
