Chrono Trigger-Inspired RPG “Threads of Time” Launching on Xbox Series X/S and PCThreads of Time PS5 and Switch Releases Unconfirmed
Threads of Time, an upcoming 2.5D RPG title inspired by classic games in the genre such as Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy, has been unveiled during the Xbox showcase at Tokyo Game Show 2024. Developed by indie studio Riyo Games, the game is currently under development for the Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam. A release date for Threads of Time has yet to be officially announced; similarly, releases for the PS5 and Nintendo Switch have not been declared.
Despite being a newly announced title, Threads of Time is expected to contend with fellow RPG Sea of Stars, 2023's acclaimed RPG hit, as a spiritual successor to Square Enix's celebrated Chrono series. The game is Riyo Games' turn-based retro-style debut title brimming with nostalgic appeal.
"Riyo Games’ vision is to create retro-inspired RPGs that evoke cherished childhood memories," the studio shared in its press release. "It all started with a promise between two kids, huddled next to their CRT TV playing RPGs after school, to one day craft fantastical, story-rich adventures together."

Featuring 2.5D pixel art, Threads of Time puts players in the roles of a diverse cast of unique characters from different eras as they embark on fantastical adventures across various epochs. The game's narrative stretches across centuries—from the eras of "dinosaurs to automatons," that will ultimately lead players to uncover a nefarious plot that threatens the "very fabric of time." Apart from the pixel art visuals, Threads of Time also includes state-of-the-art anime cutscenes that will reveal the game's intricate plot.
Additionally, Threads of Time has introduced several endearing party members including: a mysterious young swordsman from 1000 AD by the name of Rye, a skillful veterinarian from 12,000,000 BC who goes by Bo, a blade-wielding kitsune known as Rin from 2400 AD, and more. For those who want to keep this game on their watchlist, Threads of Time is now available to be wishlisted on the Xbox store and Steam!
