SEGA Weighs Global Release for Persona 5: The Phantom X
Will Persona 5: The Phantom X Reach Western Shores?
SEGA's financial report for the fiscal year ending March 2024 indicates that Persona 5: The Phantom X (P5X), the gacha spin-off of the popular Persona 5, is being considered for release in both Japan and globally. The report notes that the game's initial sales are meeting expectations, prompting consideration of broader international expansion.
Currently in Open Beta, Limited Regions
Licensed by Atlus, Persona 5: The Phantom X initially launched in a soft-launch open beta for mobile and PC in China on April 12, 2024. This was followed by further releases in Hong Kong, Macau, South Korea, and Taiwan on April 18. Perfect World Games (South Korea) publishes the game, with development handled by their Chinese subsidiary, Black Wings Game Studio.
Players assume the role of a new silent protagonist, "Wonder," a high school student by day and a Persona-wielding Phantom Thief by night. Wonder joins a team tasked with rectifying societal injustices.
Wonder's initial Persona is Janosik, inspired by Slovakian folklore and embodying a Robin Hood archetype. The original Persona 5 protagonist, Joker, features alongside a new character, YUI.
The game retains the turn-based combat, social simulation, and dungeon crawling elements of the Persona series, but integrates a gacha system for character acquisition.
New Roguelike Mode: Heart Rail
Popular *Persona* content creator, Faz, showcased the new "Heart Rail" roguelike game mode in his gameplay video. This mode, currently exclusive to the China release, bears resemblance to *Honkai: Star Rail*'s Simulated Universe, offering power-up choices, varied maps, and stage completion rewards.Strong Sales for SEGA's Full Game Portfolio
SEGA also reported strong sales for new titles in their "Full Game" category, including consistent performance from Japanese studios and continued sales of previously released games. Notable successes include Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth (1 million units sold globally in its first week), Persona 3 Reload (1 million units globally in its first week, the fastest for any Atlus title), and Football Manager 2024 (9 million players since launch).
SEGA's FY25 Projections and Structural Changes
SEGA announced a restructuring, creating a new "Gaming Business" segment. This reflects a push towards online gaming, with plans to expand into the North American market and establish online gaming as a key pillar of their business strategy.
Beyond online gaming, the new segment will encompass SEGA SAMMY CREATION's slot machine development and sales, and PARADISE SEGASAMMY's integrated resort operations.
SEGA projects year-on-year growth in sales and profits for FY2025, forecasting 93 billion Yen (approximately 597 billion USD) in revenue for the Full Game segment—a 5.4% increase. A new Sonic title is also anticipated for next year.
