Ninja Gaiden Games Unveiled As Surprise During Xbox Developer Direct 2025
Team Ninja Declares 2025 As The Year Of The Ninja
During the Xbox Developer Direct 2025, Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black were unveiled as the much-anticipated surprise Japanese IPs. As Team Ninja celebrates their 30th anniversary, they've declared 2025 as "The Year of the Ninja". Fumihiko Yasuda, the Head of Team Ninja and Producer for Ninja Gaiden 4 at Koei Tecmo, expressed his gratitude and excitement about the evolution of the series.
Developed collaboratively by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the first mainline entry since Ninja Gaiden 3 in 2012. This direct sequel promises to uphold the series' tradition of challenging yet immensely satisfying gameplay.
The reveal at an Xbox event aligns with the longstanding partnership between Team Ninja and Microsoft, highlighted by exclusive releases of the Dead or Alive series and Ninja Gaiden 2 on Xbox platforms.
Ninja Gaiden 4 Introduces A New Protagonist
Ninja Gaiden 4 introduces Yakumo, a young ninja from the Raven clan, who aspires to become a Master Ninja and challenges the dominance of the Hayabusa clan. Tomoko Nishii, Art Director at PlatinumGames, shared that Yakumo was designed "to be a character who can stand shoulder to shoulder with Ryu, the ultimate embodiment of a ninja."
Yuji Nakao, Ninja Gaiden 4’s Producer and Director from PlatinumGames, emphasized the dual appeal of the game. "With the long gap since the last game, we wanted a fresh hero to make the series more accessible to new players, while ensuring that longtime fans can still enjoy the game with Ryu Hayabusa playing a crucial role in the story," Nakao explained. Fans will see Yakumo confront various foes, including the formidable Ryu Hayabusa himself, with Ryu also remaining a playable character throughout the game.
Ninja Gaiden 4's New Combat Style
Ninja Gaiden 4 promises fast-paced, brutal combat, introducing the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style alongside the new protagonist. Masazaku Hirayama, Director at Team Ninja, highlighted that "Yakumo brings a unique flair with two combat styles: Raven Style and Nue Style, both of which feel right at home within the Ninja Gaiden series."
Nakao added that the team is committed to "preserving the challenging and deep action that defines Ninja Gaiden, while infusing it with the speed and dynamic expression characteristic of PlatinumGames." Currently, the game is 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase, with more details to be shared soon. Yasuda emphasized that Ninja Gaiden 4 remains true to its action roots, and fans will have opportunities to experience the game firsthand.
