Top horror studio Blumhouse is celebrating its 15th anniversary by bringing the 2022 hit M3GAN back to theaters ahead of the sequel's release. This limited theatrical engagement introduces a controversial twist: the use of smartphones in theaters, which is sparking debate.
As part of the Halfway to Halloween initiative, Shudder will screen M3GAN, along with Ma and Annabelle, for one-night-only events that incorporate Meta's "Movie Mate" technology. This technology enables audience members to interact with M3GAN through a chatbot and access second-screen capabilities, offering exclusive real-time content.
“Movie Mate is exclusively available to moviegoers in theaters and can be activated by sending a direct message to the Instagram account @M3GAN,” the studio explained in a report by Variety.“The experience is designed to enhance the ‘second screen’ viewing, leveraging Meta’s capabilities to build anticipation for the upcoming M3GAN 2.0, set to release on June 27.”
The studio also mentioned that fans can look forward to sneak peeks, exclusive messages from directors and cast members, and surprise appearances in certain markets. While this initiative aims to generate excitement, it raises concerns about further eroding the traditional theatrical experience. Only time will reveal how fans respond to this novel approach, but it's hoped that such innovations won't become standard in regular screenings.
The M3GAN screening is scheduled for April 30 across various theaters nationwide, with Annabelle screening on May 7 and Ma on May 14. M3GAN 2.0 will hit U.S. theaters on June 27.
