Suikoden is back! Well, sort of. Konami and MYTHRIL have announced Suikoden STAR LEAP, a new mobile RPG for Android and iOS, set to launch as a free-to-play title. While a release date remains unannounced, a launch later this year is anticipated.
For the uninitiated, the Suikoden series, first launched in 1995, is a collection of RPGs developed and published by Konami, and created by Yoshitaka Murayama. Loosely based on the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, the series—known as Suikoden in Japanese—has captivated players with its blend of political intrigue, True Runes, and the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny. Eleven entries, including spin-offs, have graced the gaming world, the last arriving in 2012. Now, instead of a direct sequel or full-fledged revival, Konami presents Suikoden STAR LEAP.
What Awaits in Suikoden STAR LEAP?
Suikoden STAR LEAP introduces a fresh cast of characters while upholding the series' tradition of gathering 108 heroes. The game retains the classic Suikoden feel through its charming pixel art style. Take a peek:
The narrative centers around the Rune of Change, one of the 27 True Runes said to have shaped the world. The protagonist, Hou, son of the village chief, celebrates his first successful hunt, only to have his world shattered by a devastating attack on his village. This sets Hou on a journey with Hisui (his servant, harboring a mysterious emotional suppression), Shirin (his childhood friend, possessing a strong sense of justice), and Shapur (a former general turned butler), to restore peace.
While excitement builds, a segment of the community expresses reservations. Long-time Suikoden fans, yearning for a proper continuation, may find the gacha mechanics of STAR LEAP a point of contention.
Further details will emerge upon the game's release. Until then, visit the official website for the latest updates.
