Keanu Reeves has shared an exciting update on the long-awaited sequel to the cult classic "Constantine," revealing that the project is now moving forward with a script in development. John Constantine, the beloved occult detective and exorcist from DC Comics, was brought to life by Reeves in the 2005 film, which has garnered a dedicated fanbase over the past two decades. Fans and Reeves alike have been eager for a follow-up, and it seems their patience might finally pay off.
In a recent interview with Inverse, Reeves disclosed that after more than a decade of trying, he and his team have successfully pitched a story to DC Studios. "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’" Reeves shared. "So, we're going to try and write a script." This marks a significant step forward for "Constantine 2," although it's important to note that the project still needs to be greenlit by DC Studios co-chiefs James Gunn and Peter Safran. As of now, "Constantine 2" is not officially part of the rebooted DCU, and neither Gunn nor Safran have mentioned it as a confirmed project.
Reeves also teased that if "Constantine 2" does come to fruition, it will be set in the same universe as the original film. He humorously added, "John Constantine's going to be tortured even more," hinting at the darker themes fans can expect. This follows comments from producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who, in an interview with ComicBook, admitted to having the script in his inbox but being too scared to read it due to his high hopes for its quality. "You know it's in my inbox right now, funny enough," he said. "I'm too scared to read it, though, I want it to be good so bad. I’ll probably read it in the next few days, when I get on an airplane."
