The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a significant creative restructuring. Several key producers have departed, leading to a complete reboot of the project. Details on the departures and the future plans are outlined below.
God of War TV Series: A Creative Reset
The Show is NOT Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the God of War adaptation. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
Key figures remaining on board include executive producers Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio Creative Director), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner and production team to redefine the series' direction. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.
A Continued Commitment to Gaming Adaptations
The Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War TV series was initially announced in 2022, following the success of the 2018 God of War game reboot. This reflects Sony's broader strategy of adapting its popular video game franchises for film and television, a strategy spearheaded by PlayStation Productions (established in 2019). This initiative also includes a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, among others.
Successful adaptations already released include Naughty Dog's Uncharted (2022) and the critically acclaimed The Last of Us (2023), with a second season slated for 2025. Other projects include the Gran Turismo film (2023) and the Twisted Metal TV series (2024). Further projects in development encompass Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film, set for release on April 25, 2025.
