Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, is defying retirement plans to develop a new game, envisioned as a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy VI. This follows the successful release of Fantasian Neo Dimension, initially intended as his final project.
A New Chapter, Inspired by FFVI
Sakaguchi's decision stems from the positive experience working with the Fantasian team, prompting him to collaborate with them again on this new venture. He aims to create a game that blends familiar elements with innovative approaches, describing it as "something old but new." This project is framed as "part two of my farewell note," suggesting it might be his final work.
Development Update and Speculation
In a 2024 Famitsu interview, Sakaguchi indicated the project is approximately one year into development, anticipating completion within two years. A Mistwalker trademark filing for "FANTASIAN DARK AGE" fueled speculation about a potential sequel, though this remains unconfirmed. The game will reportedly maintain the fantasy RPG style characteristic of his previous works.
Reunion with Square Enix
The collaboration with Square Enix for the multi-platform release of FANTASIAN Neo Dimension (December 2024) marked a significant return for Sakaguchi to his roots. He expressed the "fascinating experience" of completing the circle, having started his career at Square (now Square Enix). Despite this, he remains focused on his new project and has no plans to revisit the Final Fantasy franchise or his past works.
