Epic Games and Telefónica Partner to Pre-install Epic Games Store on Android Devices
Epic Games has forged a significant new partnership with telecommunications giant Telefónica, resulting in the pre-installation of the Epic Games Store (EGS) on Android devices sold through Telefónica's network. This means users of brands like O2 (UK), Movistar, and Vivo will find the EGS readily available as a default app option.
This seemingly small detail is a substantial strategic move by Epic Games for their mobile gaming ambitions. Telefónica's global reach, encompassing numerous countries and brands, ensures broad distribution of the EGS. This partnership will see the Epic Games Store installed alongside Google Play, offering consumers a direct alternative app marketplace.
Convenience: A Key Factor
A significant hurdle for third-party app stores is user convenience. Many casual users are unaware of, or unconcerned with, alternatives to pre-installed options. This deal positions Epic Games as a default option for users in key markets including Spain, the UK, Germany, Latin America, and beyond, providing a considerable advantage.
This collaboration represents the first phase of a long-term partnership. Epic Games and Telefónica previously collaborated on a digital recreation of the O2 Arena (also known as the Millennium Dome) within Fortnite in 2021.
This development marks a significant step forward for Epic Games, especially considering their recent legal battles with Apple and Google. This strategic partnership has the potential to yield substantial benefits, not only for Epic Games but also for mobile gamers.
