Sid Meier's Civilization 7 is set to revolutionize the franchise with its VR version, slated for release this Spring 2025. Dive in to discover the exciting features of Civ 7 VR and get the latest updates on the entire Civ 7 series.
Civilization 7 VR Exclusively on Meta Quest 3
Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 (Civ 7) is making a groundbreaking leap into virtual and mixed reality, exclusively on Meta Quest 3 and 3S. Announced on February 8, 2025, during the Civ World Summit Event, this marks the franchise's first foray into VR and MR gaming, courtesy of 2K Games and Firaxis Games.
Civ 7 Executive Franchise Producer Dennis Shirk expressed his enthusiasm in a blog post on 2K's website, stating, We're just days away now from the full launch of Civilization VII and look forward to ushering in a new era of strategy excellence for our fans!
Meta Director of Games Chris Pruett also shared his confidence in the project, saying, With the recent release of Meta Quest 3S and our strongest games and entertainment portfolio yet, it’s an awesome time for mixed reality. Civilization VII - VR is further evidence of that momentum: it’s a genuine Civ experience made specifically for deep strategy fans.
While Civ 7 will be available on PlayStation consoles, the VR version will not be released on PSVR2 at this time.
Board-Game Like Construction and Online Multiplayer
Civ 7 VR introduces a unique Command Table, allowing players to navigate the world and strategize as if playing a tabletop game. Players can zoom in to appreciate the intricate details of buildings and units or take a broader view to plan their next moves.
The game supports both immersive virtual reality and mixed reality, with seamless switching between modes. In VR, players find themselves in an ornate museum overlooking a personalized vista based on their chosen leader. In MR, the Command Table integrates with the player's physical environment.
Civ 7 VR offers single-player, co-op, and competitive multiplayer modes, accommodating up to four players on Meta Quest 3 or 3S headsets. Players can mix in AI-controlled opponents and collaborate with friends or compete against other human players. During gameplay, players can see their friends and opponents as their chosen world leaders across the Command Table. Online multiplayer requires both a 2K Account and a Meta Account.
Firaxis Games Respond to Player Feedback
Firaxis Games has actively responded to feedback gathered during Civ 7’s early access period. Announced via the official Civ 7 Twitter (X) page, the team is committed to addressing player concerns. Early access, which began on February 6, 2025, for Deluxe Edition and Founder’s Edition buyers, received mixed reviews on Steam, with many players highlighting issues with the User Interface.
In response, Firaxis Games has outlined plans for future updates, prioritizing UI improvements to make interactions more intuitive, enhance map readability, and refine formatting. They also plan to introduce community-requested features such as team-based multiplayer, a broader selection of map types, and more. A quality-of-life update is scheduled for March, focusing on UI adjustments, AI balance, diplomacy and crisis adjustments, and additional bug fixes.
Civilization 7 VR is set to launch in Spring 2025 on Meta Quest 3 and 3S, though a specific release date has yet to be announced. Meanwhile, Civilization 7 is currently in early access and will see its worldwide release on February 11, 2025, across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Switch, and PC.
