Mastering the Art of Parrying in Avowed: A Comprehensive Guide
Nothing beats the thrill of perfectly parrying an enemy attack in an action game, turning their offensive momentum into a devastating counter-attack. This guide details how to unlock and utilize the parry mechanic in Avowed.
Unlocking the Parry Ability:
The parry ability isn't immediately available. To unlock it:
- Access the in-game menu and navigate to the "Abilities" screen.
- Select the "Ranger" tab.
- Locate the Parry ability (typically in the top-middle column).
- Invest an ability point into one of the three core ability trees to unlock it.
Parry has three ranks, each with increased efficiency:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks the Parry ability. |
2 | Player Level 5 | 25% increased efficiency, greater stun effect. |
3 | Player Level 8 | 50% increased efficiency, greater stun effect. |
At level 10, the "Arrow Deflection" ability unlocks, allowing you to parry projectiles.
Executing a Parry:
Successful parrying requires precise timing. Block immediately before an enemy attack connects. A metallic clang and a visual cue will confirm a successful parry, stunning the enemy. Mastering the timing may require practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Limitations of Parrying:
Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle must be dodged. Furthermore, only certain weapons can parry:
- Single-handed and two-handed weapons (not in the off-hand).
- Shields (in the off-hand).
Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
Benefits of Parrying:
Parrying stuns attackers, creating openings for significant damage. It's an effective defensive and offensive technique, particularly for melee builds. However, it's less crucial for ranged characters. Avowed offers easy respeccing, allowing you to adjust your abilities as needed.
