I'm generally practical with my spending. Essentials get priority, and the occasional discounted video game might sneak in, but that's usually it. It wasn't until last year that I even considered buying something as frivolous as a LEGO set. Despite loving them as a child, I guess I just grew out of it. Partly, that's because LEGOs are expensive. While some cool sets exist under $25, anything movie or video game related tends to be pricier. That's why it took me so long to buy the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. It's been on sale for under $50 since October, but I only recently decided my desk needed a new, rather unusual, potted plant.

I first considered this set after seeing IGN's build. Being a fan of almost every Mario game, it seemed the perfect way to showcase my love for the franchise. LEGO has many botanical flower sets, but none are as delightfully terrifying as this little guy.
My LEGO Piranha Plant
Having built it, I'm thrilled to have it on my desk. It evokes the Mushroom Kingdom, a little potted Piranha Plant I cultivate during work. I enjoyed the build as much as the finished product. It took an afternoon, but remained engaging throughout. It's my only LEGO Nintendo set, but my experience makes me want more.

LEGOs are expensive. With adult-targeted sets costing $200+, it's easy to overspend. Unless you're wealthy, there's a balance between treating yourself and breaking the bank. This Mario set, under $50, felt justifiable. The hours spent building and the daily happiness it brings make it worthwhile for me. Is that happiness worth over $50? Probably. But that's my limit.
